Hospitality Project

The Malibu Beach Inn

Located on an unobstructed, oceanfront stretch of Billionaire’s Beach in Malibu, California, The Malibu Beach Inn is a 47-Room luxury boutique hotel, just South of the famed Malibu Pier.

Acquired in 2005, The Malibu Beach Inn underwent an extensive remodel and transformation from a dated pink flamingo, hacienda style, two-star hotel to an elegant and luxurious, destination hotel, complete with new amenities: spa, gym, meeting room, and new private restaurant, The Carbon Beach Club.

The entire transformation from initial conceptual proposal to returning the keys back to the owner took 27 months.

Process

A diamond in the rough...

Set amongst multi-million dollar estates, The Malibu Beach Inn was originally a Spanish hacienda-style, pink flamingo exterior, with seashells stenciled guest room painted walls and large oversized wicker furniture. The hotel lacked any street presence along busy Pacific Coast Highway, nor any of the glamour and sophistication guests would expect to experience in Malibu.

The client’s intention was to create a statement piece, to make The Malibu Beach Inn a destination, the type of elegance both visually and functionally, for guest to experience.

A design/build method was utilized in its transformation, which was unheard of for this type and size of project. Initially, the project was going to split into two separate phases: guest rooms and lobby/dining, but given the overlap in construction and timing, both phases were designed and constructed concurrently.

Completion

It's all about the view...

A warm, neutral cream and dark chocolate color palette throughout, along with glass, polished chrome, wenge wood, and ipe wood horizontal screens, and new formal entry for guest to experience upon arrival, complete the transformation of the Euro-Asian concept, bringing The Malibu Beach Inn into a new era of stately elegance.

As a result, the client was able to increase its star rating from a 2-star to a 3-star hotel, increase hotel revenue and bookings, and become a destination location synonymous with ideas and expectations guests envision for Malibu.
